Second Hand Furniture Proves a Big Hit with Brits

It’s been well documented in recent weeks and months how demand for big ticket furniture items on the high street is waning — hardly surprising given consumer concerns about rising unemployment and living costs. But demand for second hand furniture, according to free classifieds site, VivaStreet.co.uk, is proving far more resilient.
During January, traffic to the used furniture section of VivaStreet was 86% higher than December 2010 and 29% up on November of last year. Second hand sofas proved the biggest hit with Brits, receiving one third of traffic to the used furniture section in January. Second most popular, with 24% of traffic, were second hand table and chairs.
While many people are buying second hand furniture to save money, others are advertising their own unwanted furniture on the site in order to make extra cash. During January, the number of new used furniture ads posted on the site was 27% higher than January 2010 and 15% higher than December of last year.
James Pass, UK Country Manager, VivaStreet.co.uk, comments:
“In the Age of Austerity, Brits are battening down the hatches and looking to make and save money wherever they can. A sofa, bed or table and chairs can easily cost in the four figures on the high street but can be picked up for far less online. The various retail statistics that have come out in recent months give the impression that furniture sales have ground to a halt. This isn’t the case. People still need furniture but are simply more savvy about where to buy it.”
